Academy for Excellence in Local Governance
Academy for Excellence in Local Governance
All summer conference registrants are welcome to attend Academy workshops.
The Academy for Excellence in Local Governance is a voluntary training program designed to help local government officials, especially newly elected officials, meet the challenges of their roles. Municipal enrollees are required to successfully complete nine core and five electives to earn certification from the University of Maryland.
The Academy is designed as a two-year program; however, participants may complete the requirements sooner than expected, or may use an additional third year to complete program requirements. Payment of a one-time $250 registration fee is required to participate in the Academy. Five core and seven elective Academy topics are included among MML’s 2024 summer conference workshop choices. The Academy extends elective credit to topics at the summer conference that meet Academy elective criteria. These electives are ever changing and are for all conference registrants, including those who are Academy graduates.
Again in 2024, we are offering a special Academy Graduate Class: Negotiation. You must be a graduate of the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance to attend this session. Pre-registration and a separate registration fee required.
The Academy is a partnership between the Maryland Municipal League, Maryland Association of Counties and the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy. The Local Government Insurance Trust (LGIT) is the lead sponsor of the Academy. If you need additional information or a copy of your transcript, contact Elizabeth Hinson, Academy Registrar, 301/405-6227, ehinson@umd.edu.
